Telecommunication/IT
Telecommunications and IT rank among the key industries on the path to the information and knowledge society. The products and services offered by these industries provide the basis for networking between people and between businesses. At the same time, the industry is one of the pillars of the German economy, with a market volume that is estimated at approx. 145 billion Euros.
Information technology (IT) includes hardware companies as well as the fast-growing sectors of software and IT services. The IT market tends to react more sensitively to changes in the economy than, for instance, the telecommunications industry. The characteristic challenge in this area is the strong pressure on prices, which results in only minor increases in revenue for hardware products despite constant and substantial growth in turnover figures.
Strong price competition is also a characteristic feature in the telecommunications industry, viz. telephone or data communications providers or the producers of end user or infrastructure hardware. Add to this the fundamental changes in technology that the industry is constantly subject to and the markets seem to be in a state of constant flux – currently, the trend goes away from landline to mobile phone technology and from voice services to data transfer products.
