Digitalization has resulted in the new position of Chief Digital Officer (CDO) as both a driver of digital transformation and the one responsible for that transformation. While traditional roles and duties associated with CDO positions have been shattered, the CDO function has remained uncertain up to now, with greatly varying duties in the context of digital transformation. This leads us to reflect on questions such as: how is the CDO role currently defined what competencies and responsibilities are connected with it, and how is this new function and strategy experienced in practice? To that end we interviewed the Director of Bitkom as well as Digital and IT directors from across various sectors and compiled their experiences in our study. These findings were subjected to scrutiny in personal interviews.
